Which Medicare option includes drug coverage?

Medicare medication coverage assists in managing the costs of prescription drugs you require. Regardless of whether you currently use prescription medication, you should contemplate enrolling in Medicare medication coverage. This coverage is voluntary and available to everyone enrolled in Medicare. If you opt out when initially eligible without maintaining other credible drug coverage such as from an employer or union, or receiving Extra Help, you may face a late enrollment fee if you choose to enroll later. Typically, this fee persists over the duration of your Medicare medication coverage. To acquire Medicare medication coverage, you must enlist in a Medicare-sanctioned plan with drug coverage. These plans differ in pricing and the specific medications they cover.

Here are two methods of obtaining Medicare medication coverage:

1. Medicare prescription plans. These plans supplement drug coverage to Original Medicare, select Medicare Cost Plans, certain Private Fee-for-Service plans, and Medical Savings Account plans. To be eligible for a standalone Medicare prescription plan, you should have Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and/or Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance).

2. Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) or another Medicare Health Plan with medication coverage. All your Part A, Part B, and medication coverages are provided through these plans. Notably, you must be enrolled in Part A and Part B to partake in a Medicare Advantage Plan, and it’s important to note that not all plans include medication coverage.
