What does Medicare not cover?

Which services are excluded from Medicare coverage?

Top 10 Exclusions from Medicare Coverage

Medicare is a federal health insurance scheme primarily for individuals aged 65 or above. It also extends benefits to younger people with specific conditions. Those enrolled should be aware that Medicare does not cover all medical services, to avoid unexpected expenses for non-covered services.

Round-the-Clock Home Care
While Medicare offers some support for certain nursing and health aide services, it doesn’t extend to round-the-clock home care. People needing continuous care must seek alternative options to meet such requirements.

Acupuncture
Medicare does not typically cover alternative treatments, which means individuals preferring such services must fund them differently. Case in point: acupuncture. Despite testimonials to its benefits, it remains outside the bounds of conventional medicine and, therefore, outside of Medicare coverage.

Elective Cosmetic Procedures
Though elective cosmetic procedures can significantly affect one’s mental health, Medicare typically will not cover these surgical enhancements. Only procedures necessary for the functional improvement of a bodily function may qualify for coverage; all others must be paid for out-of-pocket.

Non-medical Custodial Care
Non-medical assistance, like custodial care, usually doesn’t require a medical professional to execute essential daily activities like bathing or meal preparation. Medicare does not cover such services unless they are medically necessary and provided by Medicare-approved healthcare professionals.

Dental Services
Historically, dental services have been distinct from other medical treatments, a tradition that persists. Consequently, the vast majority of dental services are not covered by Medicare, with the exception of select cases where dental work is a prerequisite for other medical procedures.

Routine Foot Care
Any standard foot maintenance, including massages, removals of corns, and calluses, is generally not covered by Medicare. Certain medical circumstances, such as structural foot issues or diseases requiring medically necessary treatment, may be exceptions, though co-pays and deductibles may apply.

International Travel Healthcare
Medicare recipients traveling abroad should consider additional travel insurance for any health issues that might arise. Medicare provides no coverage for most healthcare services needed outside U.S. boundaries, except in rare instances like proximity to non-U.S. hospitals during emergencies.

Hearing Devices
Neither hearing devices nor the related fitting exams are covered by Medicare. The same goes for regular auditory screenings. However, exams for diagnosing and balancing for medical purposes may be covered, though additional costs can be incurred without supplemental insurance plans.

Professional Nursing Facility Care
Medicare provides coverage for professional nursing care in a medical environment for a limited duration, commonly 20 days. After that, beneficiaries may have to shoulder increased costs or even the full amount of nursing care expenses.

Regular Eye Examinations
Standard vision screenings are not included in Medicare’s coverage. Certain specific eye treatments might be covered under particular circumstances.
