During your regular visits (including your yearly “Wellness” visit), your provider may perform a cognitive assessment to check for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) plan also covers a separate visit with your doctor or specialist to review your cognitive function, diagnose dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, and formulate a care plan. Among the symptoms of cognitive impairment are difficulty remembering, learning new things, concentrating, managing finances, or making decisions. It’s important to understand why you may be experiencing confusion, since other conditions (like depression, anxiety, and delirium) can also cause it.
Your doctor may perform the following during a cognitive assessment:
– Review your medication, perform an examination, and ask about your medical history.
– Develop a care plan to address and manage your symptoms.
– Assist you in developing or updating your advance care plan.
You can bring someone with you, like a spouse, friend, or caregiver, to help give information and answer questions during your Wellness visit.
