Do I have to sign up for Medicare at Age 65 ?
San Marcos – Escondido – Vista
This is a common situation, but if you have any special circumstances,
you will want to talk to a Medicare expert to avoid any problems.
If you continue to work past your 65th birthday and are covered under a group health plan based on current employment,
( * Your Current Employer needs to have more than 10 Employees to be considered Credible Coverage* If you current employer has less than 10 employees than that is not considered Credible Coverage),
You have the option then to defer enrollment into Medicare.
It would just depend on if your Employer Group Insurance (Credible Coverage) is more expensive then Medicare…
That would be your choice.
If you decide to wait to turn on Medicare, then Once you retire, you will be given an eight-month Special Enrollment Period that begins the month after employment ends or your group health insurance ends, whichever happens first.
As long as you enroll during this Special Enrollment Period, you won’t be assessed with any late enrollment penalties.
