Medicare and home health care – defining the care Medicare buys

In-home healthcare is financed by Medicare at a set rate for a span of 30 days. The amount paid by a beneficiary encompasses all operational and asset costs that efficient providers incur over a 30-day cycle, including the provision of skilled nursing, physical, occupational, and speech rehabilitation, services related to medical social work, and assistance from aides.

Healthcare services may be administered in the residence to those recipients typically requiring part-time or occasional professional medical attention from a nurse or physical therapist.

Employees from a home health agency (HHA) visit recipients’ residences to render:
• professional nursing attention;
• physical, occupational, and language rehabilitation;
• medical social work assistance; and
• aide services from home health personnel.

Telemedicine options, like monitoring of patients from afar and digital consultations, are also encompassed within the in-home health advantage.
