Medicare Part B-ID is a benefit that helps kidney transplant recipients pay for immunosuppressive drugs after they lose regular Medicare coverage. When you qualify for Medicare due to end-stage renal disease and receive a successful kidney transplant, your Medicare coverage typically ends 36 months after the transplant. This creates a gap in coverage for the vital immunosuppressive medications needed to prevent organ rejection.
Part B-ID fills this gap by covering immunosuppressive drugs for those who lose Medicare eligibility solely because their kidney transplant was successful. To qualify for Part B-ID, you must have had a Medicare-covered kidney transplant, have Part A at the time of transplant, and not have other Medicare coverage available.
The Part B-ID premium for 2026 is $113 per month. You’ll pay a $283 annual deductible and 20% coinsurance for the immunosuppressive drugs. This benefit only covers FDA-approved immunosuppressive medications and doesn’t include other Part B services.
For ESRD Medicare eligibility, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant.
