Prophylactic Care – Lung Cancer Screenings
Medicare provides coverage for lung cancer screenings utilizing low-dose computed tomography
annually if you satisfy these revised criteria:
• Your age is between 50 and 77.
• You show no signs or symptoms of lung cancer (you are without symptoms).
• You currently smoke, or you have ceased smoking within the past 15 years.
• You possess a history of tobacco use amounting to a minimum of 20 “pack years” (equivalent to
smoking one pack—20 cigarettes—daily for two decades).
• You obtain a prescription from your physician.
There is no cost to you for this screening if your physician agrees to the Medicare terms.
Note: Prior to your initial lung cancer screening, you must arrange a
consultation with your physician to deliberate on the advantages and potential dangers associated with lung cancer
screening. You and your physician can then make an informed choice regarding the suitability of a lung cancer screening for you.
