Medicare covers dental services when they are medically necessary and directly related to specific medical conditions or treatments. Since January 1, 2023, Medicare has expanded coverage for certain dental procedures that are integral to treating covered medical conditions.
Medicare now covers dental services in these specific situations: reconstruction of a ridge when performed during surgical tumor removal, stabilization or immobilization of teeth connected to jaw fracture reduction, tooth extraction to prepare for radiation treatment of neoplastic disease, dental splints when used with medically necessary treatment of a medical condition, and dental examination and treatment before cardiac valve replacement, valvuloplasty, or organ transplant procedures.
This coverage applies only when dental care is essential to the success of a covered medical procedure or treatment. The dental services must be performed by a Medicare-enrolled provider and meet all Medicare requirements for medical necessity. Medicare does not cover routine dental care, cleanings, fillings, dentures, or dental services for general health conditions like diabetes.
