The Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program extended prototype is an organized initiative designed to thwart the development of type 2 diabetes in individuals identified with prediabetes. This clinical initiative entails at minimum 16 rigorous “core” sessions following a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sanctioned syllabus, delivered across six months in a communal, classroom-like environment conducive to imparting practical skills for lasting dietary modifications, heightened physical activity, and behavioral tactics for managing weight. Upon finishing the core education, less demanding subsequent gatherings conducted monthly support participants in preserving healthful lifestyle habits. The overarching aim of the extended prototype is for participants to achieve a minimum of 5 percent reduction in body weight.
Thankfully, it is often possible to postpone or avert the onset of type 2 diabetes through modifications in health habits. The MDPP extended model is a systematic behavior modification program that seeks to impede the progression to type 2 diabetes in Medicare beneficiaries identified with prediabetes.
