The Welcome to Medicare package is an informational packet sent to people who are automatically enrolled in Medicare when they become eligible at age 65. This automatic enrollment happens if you’re already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits when you turn 65.
The package includes your Medicare card, an introductory letter, and a booklet explaining important coverage decisions you need to make. This is typically the first official mail you’ll receive from Medicare about your enrollment.
If you’re automatically enrolled in both Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance), you’ll receive these materials at specific times. Three months before your 65th birthday and Medicare coverage begins, you’ll get the Welcome package with your Medicare card. Then one month before your coverage starts, you’ll receive a reminder letter about decisions you should make.
The booklet contains crucial information about your coverage options, including whether to keep Part B, which has a monthly premium of $202.90 in 2026. It also explains enrollment periods, coverage gaps, and supplemental insurance options.
