Preventative benefit – Lung cancer examinations
Medicare provides coverage for lung cancer examinations using low dose computed tomography
annually provided you fulfill the following revised criteria:
• Your age is between 50 and 77.
• You exhibit no lung cancer indicators or manifestations (you remain without symptoms).
• You’re currently smoking or have ceased smoking within the past 15 years.
• You possess a history of tobacco use equivalent to a minimum of 20 “pack years” (averaging
one pack—20 cigarettes—each day over 20 years).
• You have a prescription from your physician.
There is no cost for this benefit if the doctor participates in Medicare.
Note: Prior to your initial lung cancer examination, you will need to have a
consultation with your physician to evaluate the advantages and potential risks of lung cancer
screening. Together with your physician, you can determine if lung cancer screening suits your health needs.
