San Marcos is a city in San Diego County, California, situated in the North County region. The population of the city was 83,781, according to the 2010 census. California State University San Marcos is located there. The city is verged east by Escondido, on the southwest by Encinitas, on the west via Carlsbad, and on the northwest by Vista. In the southwestern section of the city, Lake San Marcos is an enclave, or county island, nominally an unincorporated settlement but inside San Marcos’ sphere of influence.
