Medicare Long-term care hospital services

Extended stay hospitals are dedicated to the treatment of individuals facing multiple serious health conditions who require hospitalization for an extended period of at least 25 days. Over time, with appropriate care, these individuals may recuperate sufficiently to return to their homes. Services provided by long-term care hospitals can include:
– Inhalation therapy
– Management of severe head injuries
– Intensive rehabilitation programs
– Alleviation of severe discomfort

Financial Responsibilities with Original Medicare
For the year 2023, here’s what you contribute for each benefit period:
– Days 1-60: $1,600 deductible*
– Days 61-90: $400 copayment for each day
– Days 91 and further: $800 copayment for each “lifetime reserve day” post-day 90 for every benefit period (capped at 60 reserve days throughout your lifetime)
– Subsequent to exhaustion of lifetime reserve days: Full expenses

*If you have incurred a deductible for hospital services during a prior admission within the same benefit period, you will not need to satisfy the deductible again for services received in the long-term care hospital. Your benefit period begins on the initial day of your previous hospital admission, which is considered when calculating your deductible. This means that you won’t be responsible for a deductible for care at a long-term care hospital if:
– You are directly transferred from an immediate care hospital
– You are admitted into a long-term care facility no more than 60 days following discharge from a hospital.
