Escondido is located 30 miles (48 kilometers) northeast of Downtown San Diego, 15 miles from the beach, and 40 miles from the Mexican border in San Diego County’s North County district. Rugged hills in a small valley surround the city. It is one of San Diego County’s oldest cities, founded in 1888. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 151,038 people.
Escondido’s climate
Escondido’s climate is characteristic of the Mediterranean, with scorching summers and cold, rainy winters. Because of its inland location, it is warmer in the summer and colder in the winter than coastal communities such as San Diego, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. The average annual precipitation is roughly 15 in. (380 mm). However, it varies significantly from year to year. Rainfall totals are more significant in the hills to the north and east, with most locations above 2,000 feet receiving 20-24 inches and Palomar Mountain, 15 miles east, receiving over 30 inches. More than 80% of the annual precipitation falls from November through March. Snow is almost unheard of, while tiny hail is occasionally dropped by winter and spring thunderstorms. Avocados and oranges may be grown in large quantities due to the moderate temperature.
Why Escondido is a tourist attraction
1. Dixon Lake
Location: Escondido, CA 92027, USA
Dixon Lake is located on Escondido’s northwestern outskirts. Picnics, camping, and fishing are all favorite activities here. The State of California Department of Fish and Wildlife has given Dixon Lake an Aquaculture Permit, removing the need for fishing licenses. However, all fishermen aged eight and up will require a daily lake fishing permit, which may be purchased at the concession stand. The city stocks various species throughout the year, including bass, bluegill, carp, catfish, crappie, and trout. Dixon Lake also hosts the annual Trout Derby each year.
Dixon Lake provides fresh water to Escondido and is a popular fishing spot, with fishing licenses available at the on-site store. Although swimming is prohibited, rowboats, powered boats, and pedal boats can be rented. Dixon Lake includes around 34 campsites with views of the lake and Escondido. On both sides of the lake, various pathways follow the shoreline of Dixon Lake and several fishing sites and floating docks. While entry to the park is entirely free, parking a car in the park costs $5.00 on Saturdays and Sundays. However, there is plenty of free parking at the Daley Ranch trailheads outside the Dixon Lake gate.
2. Lake Wohlford
Location: 25453 Lake Wohlford Rd. Escondido, CA
Lake Wohlford is located in Escondido’s northeast corner. Several walking routes along the lake’s edge are permitted, and fishing is permitted. The Lake Wohlford Cafe, which opened in 1949 and specialized in locally caught catfish, is also located on the northern shore.
